IOC: There's no figure skating judging controversy

$

0

Dan Wolken, USA Today Sports -The IOC was quick Friday morning to play down any hint of a figure skating judging scandal after Adelina Sotnikova of Russia was the surprising winner of the gold medal, upsetting reigning Olympic gold medalist Yuna Kim of South Korea and Italy's Carolina Kostner.

"I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams. "I think first off we have to see if there's an official complaint, because the people concerned I'd assume would make a complaint and it would go to the federation. I'm not aware there's been such a complaint and if there was they'd got through the federation. I don't think it's even happened yet. If it does that will be the first step to go through if there isn't a credible complaint we wouldn't take it any further."

After Thursday night's event, some skating insiders questioned Sotnikova's marks and the makeup of the judging panel.

The nine judges for the short and long programs are chosen by draw from a pool of 13, with eight of the judges only working one event or the other. Judges from the United States, South Korea, Great Britain and Sweden were not chosen to work the women's long program after being on the women's short program panel the night before.

Two of their replacements were Ukrainian Yuri Balkov, who was kicked out of judging for a year after being tape-recorded by a Canadian judge trying to fix the Nagano ice dancing competition, and Alla Shekhovtseva, a Russian judge who is married to Russian federation general director Valentin Pissev. The two other new long program judges were from Estonia and France, which was the country that conspired with Russia to try to fix the pairs and ice dancing competition at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

But Adams was having none of that.

"I think we need a little of a reality check here," he said. "I don't know much about skating I saw some of it last night and her performance was agreed by many to be absolutely fantastic.I'm not an expert. The IOC has a pretty sophisticated judging system with safeguards in place and each of the judges has a video review where they can review each of the jumps so there's a number of things in place. At this stage, I think we're discussing purely hypothetical things and my personal point of view would be to congratulate a fantastic performance.

"I think it's the federation which chooses the makeup of the panel and it's clear there's no hiding who's on the panel. I don't think as yet, the first step would be for someone to make some kind of complaint which hasn't happened as far as I know."

One last dance. One last hug.

This time as gold medalists.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White were back on the ice on Saturday night, performing in the gala exhibition at the Iceberg Palace with all of the top figure skaters in the world. And when it was done, when they closed the show with one last group performance and waved good-bye to the crowd, Davis and White were locked arm-in-arm with a pair of old Canadian rivals, their training mates at the Canton's Arctic Edge, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who finished with the silver medal.

"The last couple of days have been a whirlwind," Davis said.

Since winning the gold medal in ice dance Monday, Davis and White have done an endless string of interviews and photos and videos and meet-and-greets and more interviews and more photos and more interviews.

"It's certainly been busy and tiring, but in the best of ways," Davis said. "We are enjoying everything we are doing. We are trying to take advantage of the moment. Not jump into the future, and just really be in the present."

Next up? Davis, from West Bloomfield, Mich., and White, from Bloomfield Hills, are headed to Moscow to do a television show.

"Then, we are going to New York for a little bit of media," Davis said. "And then, we will sit down, when we get back to Detroit, and figure out if we are going to do worlds or what our plan might be."

Now, it will get really interesting for them.

How will this gold medal change their lives? What opportunities will arise from it?

The clock is ticking.
TELEVISION NEXT?

Davis, 27, and White, 26, have a small window to capitalize on their Olympic gold medal.

"The next four to eight weeks will be really important for them," said David Schwab, a senior vice president for Octagon, a Washington D.C.-based agency that helps companies determine how to use celebrity talent in consumer marketing and business-to-business programs.

Octagon helped pair up Adrian Peterson and Castrol motor oil, and John Stamos and Dannon yogurt.

"My gut would say, the first thing they should do is get on Dancing with the Stars," Schwab said. "They would do well, and it would be a fun story of separating them, almost pitting them against each other."

What a great point. That would make great television.

Just seeing Davis and White partnered with somebody else.

"One, they can make some money off that," Schwab said. "Even more important than making money, they get to be seen by 15 (million)-20 million people every week."

Dancing with the Stars has turned into a springboard for several Olympians, including Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson,Misty May-Treanor and Apolo Ohno.

All of those athletes went on that show trying to transcend their sport and expand their fan base.

"When you look at Apolo, you don't think of him as a speedskater," Schwab said. "Of course, that's what he is. Now, you see him as a host of game shows and on network shows on NBC."

idk what to do with myself now that there's no more skating to watch

Davis and White have an advantage over other Winter Olympians because they can join a skating tour and those tours already are linked to sponsors. Even better, they should be able to charge more to appear at a show.

Also, they already have sponsorship deals with Ralph Lauren, Kellogg's, Visa, Procter & Gamble, Puffs, AT&T, MK Blades and a Japanese mattress company.

Schwab said it was important to get Davis and White to New York or Los Angeles right away.

"I'd have them walk the halls of different companies and Fortune 500 companies, just to say hello, just to keep the interest level," Schwab said.

It is hard to predict which Olympians will hit it big with endorsements or how they might reinvent themselves. An Olympic athlete needs to have the right personality and find the right vehicle.

Look at Julie Foudy.

She has transformed herself from a soccer player to soccer analyst to general TV person, and she was in Sochi for ABC.
Or look at former figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, who might be the true breakout stars of the Winter Olympics for NBC.

Davis and White have other things going for them. They are attractive and extremely likeable. "The challenge they have is the size of the sport," Schwab said. "Their audience is women 25-54. That's the figure skating audience."
Now, here's a problem. There are lots of athletes who are fighting for the same sponsorship money. The same opportunities.

And Davis and White have a small window of opportunity. The Winter Olympics soon will be forgotten by general sports fans, who quickly will move on to other things, because spring training is heating up and then March Madness is right around the corner.

CREDIBILITY, FOREVER
Virtue, 24, and Moir, 26, already have gone through this. They won the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

"One of the best lessons that we have learned is that ultimately, it doesn't really change your life," Virtue said. "I don't feel like we've changed as people. It's personally very satisfying. It's thrilling to set a goal and work hard and achieve something like that. Looking forward, no matter what field of work we end up in, we'll be able to use those skill sets."

But an Olympic medal offers instant credibility. Forever.

This might sound a little dark, but it will be the first line of their obituary.

"I can't speak for other athletes, but my medal provided a lifelong credential that enabled me to put an exclamation point on the end of my career," said figure skater Paul Wylie, the 1992 Olympic silver medalist. "It opened the doors for me to compete in professional competitions at the highest levels and to skate on tour, extending my career and enabling me to grow the artistic side of my skating by working with producers and choreographers. It also made my skating experience relevant to the average television viewer and gave me a profile as a high achiever on Team USA."

Wylie said he hopes Davis and White continue to skate. The world championships are next month in Saitama, Japan.
"How about reviving the professional competitions?" Wylie said.

He suggested staging a rematch with Virtue and Moir. Which sounds incredibly interesting when you think about it.

And he offered this piece of advice to them: "Be creative. Take risks and create. Educate folks on what ice dancing and figure skating is."

Wylie hopes that White, in particular, will inspire young boys to try figure skating, since "the numbers have dwindled in recent years with so many other choices for sports."

Will Davis and White continue skating? Will they strike it rich with endorsements? Will they branch out to find new, creative ways to expand the sport?

It's hard to say. But that clock is ticking.

ALSO: Nice long article about all the press they had to do after their win.

But LOL this excerpt:

After two other interviews, the group heads to NBC’s 24-hour commissary. “Is your stomach growling?” White asks, as he dives in for a cream-filled donut. He closes his eyes as he goes in for a huge bite, leaving remnants of the treat on both sides of his mouth. “O.K., it’s official. We won,” he says. As the other people sitting at the table give him the eye, Davis snaps to and says, “Hey, I’ve been good. I haven’t had a fry.”

Has Aurora found her Prince Phillip? American Ice Princess Gracie Gold responds to prom request

Gracie Gold is coming back to the United States and she's sure to be met with a wealth of opportunities.

Among them: A California teenager named Dyer Pettijohn is wondering if the 18-year-old American figure skater will be his date to prom this spring. Pettijohn went through the trouble of making an intricate YouTube video to get his request to Gold, who finished fourth in the women's figure skating competition last week.

Gracie's Response:

So is that an affirmative? Gold isn't saying just yet.

However, if Pettijohn is banking on the fact that she'll say yes because he thinks she didn't have a "normal" high school experience, we have some bad news. Gold, who is finishing her high school diploma through online courses with the University of Missouri, has been to her prom before.

BONUS: Ashley Wagner also gets asked to prom

Cate Blanchett is Johnny's spirit animal (aka Johnny &Tara go to the Oscars and Victor stays home)

After captivating audiences with their smart commentary and coordinating outfits in Sochi, Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski emerged – in our minds, at least – as the winners of the Olympic Games.

How perfect, then, that the pair will host Access Hollywood’s red-carpet Oscars coverage on Sunday— a perfect combination of their judging and shade-throwing skills. The Cut spoke with Tara and Johnny about how they’re getting ready for the Oscars, how they feel about encroaching on Joan Rivers’s turf, and what will happen if they see Meryl Streep.

So what have you been doing as far as coordinating your looks? Do you have any ideas?

Johnny Weir: Definitely. We usually take great pride in selecting and shopping and pulling, and we had to call in some help just to get racks of clothes set aside. We were both talking about white and gold and that being our look for Oscars Sunday. We pulled from Chanel, Rick Owens, and Tom Ford. We’re just sort of going through everything now and I’m running out at some point today to find perfect shoes. I’s all very crazy and last-minute, but we’re so enjoying it.

Tara Lipinski: It’s not like identical outfits, but we always love to tie in something. Initially we really felt white or gold, and I don’t know, we’ll see if that will actually hold up

Johnny, will you wear a tux or a riff on a tux?

JW: I will do a tux-ish moment. I suppose if you’re looking at awards shows and how people dress, I’m bringing a bit of the Grammys to the Oscars. If I showed up to the Oscars in a black tuxedo with a black tie, it wouldn't be authentic, it wouldn’t be me, and I would feel like a penguin. I definitely am trying to skirt the line of what is appropriate for the event and what I feel most comfortable and most beautiful in.

Do you have ideas for the hair and beauty look? Your hair seems very versatile.

JW: My hair is reasonably versatile. It’s the hair that I add to my own hair that makes me really versatile. [Laughs] I love playing with hair fashion. I love to design a look or base an idea off a hair style that I’ve seen someplace else, whether from a black-and-white movie or something I see on runways. I like to try and establish a way I can actually do it on short men’s hair. I really take a lot of pride in the creative aspect of my hair and makeup and how I  look. For the Oscars I definitely want a bit of a wavy, Elvis Presley-ish, sort of finger-wavy Gatsby moment.

TL: Johnny and I did an Old Hollywood look in Sochi for one of the Bob Costas shows, and he loved it on me. He was like, “Tara, you have to wear this, you have to wear this at the Oscars, this is what you’re wearing!” And I really do love a fun finger-wave, but at the same time, I don’t know if I will go that route just because it feels so cliché to do the Old Hollywood look for the Oscars. A beach wave is a happy place for me. So I can’t do that for the red carpet, but I would like to find a happy medium of something modern and fun.

How is getting ready to host a big red-carpet gig like this similar to skating in the Olympics?

TL: I think both Johnny and I can agree that competing at an Olympic Games ... four minutes changes the rest of your life, and dealing with that intense mental and physical pressure was so traumatic in a way that anything from here on out seems  much more fun. I think we both approach it that way. Yes, this is a different atmosphere than what we’re used to, but I think at the same time, we feel comfortable in it.

Who wears more makeup?

JW: I think I definitely wear more makeup.

TL: [Laughs] Sometimes Johnny. On normal days, I don’t love makeup. You will not see foundation in my drawer. Obviously I have to wear it for TV, but Johnny loves a good makeup moment.

If I were to look in your makeup bag right now, what would I see in there?

JW: I’ve been in these situations before when I was younger, and I wouldn’t wear a lot of makeup when I was doing television or red carpet, and I would just find myself looking hideous. I’m very anti-shine, I’m very anti-spots. I travel constantly and my skin is very important to me and it doesn’t always look its best. My routine for television and the red carpet is to darken the eyebrow, to do a bit of mascara, to definitely contour a bit so I look nice and slim because every camera — I don’t care what anyone says — does add ten pounds. I like to look slim and beautiful. I use MAC Prep and Prime translucent powder so I'm not shiny. I hate shiny and I hate dewy.

Have you given each other any good makeup tips or product recommendations?

JW: If I have a pimple, I do what everyone else does and I try to kill it, then it gets red. I find if I immediately put Neosporin on, it is gone within an hour. I showed Tara in Sochi how well it works. We don’t need these alcohol pens and craziness. You just need a little Neosporin!

Did you guys help each other get ready for for the camera in Sochi, and how will you help each other out as you get ready for the Oscars?

JW: We definitely did. We would prepare our outfits together. We’d come up with a basic theme the night before the broadcast, and then the next day we’d try them out. There were a lot of times when we were late for our cars because we were struggling with one aspect of our outfits. I  get smile lines because I smile too much in my makeup and Tara would constantly pat them down for me. I would check her for shine and make sure her hair was looking flat and lovely instead of frizzy on camera because of the headsets. We definitely look after each other and if there’s something wrong we’re there for one another. Tara actually carries around chocolate bars in her purse in case she gets hungry. Chocolate is her go-to, so I am constantly on chocolate watch to make sure she doesn't smear it on her clothes.

Who are you looking most forward to seeing on the red carpet?

JW: I’m honestly so excited to see Cate Blanchett. I found her really incredible in Blue Jasmine, and she’s been a favorite of mine for a long time, since the first Lord of the Rings movie. I absolutely love her. She’s my spirit animal and I think when I dream, sometimes I appear as Cate Blanchett.

TL: It goes back and forth. We did this thing where it was “your prediction of the best red-carpet moment” and I love Dior. I have a slight obsession with Dior, so Jennifer Lawrence is on the top of my list. At the same time, I am really excited to see Naomie Harris. Some of her moments … the Gucci, the Burberry … I can’t wait to see what she brings for Sunday. Obviously Lupita is amazing. I actually work with her stylist.

In this age of sidebutt and underboob, how do you think you should expose your body parts without being blatant about it? A lot of fashion with sheer panels reminds me of skating outfits, actually.

JW: I think sometimes less is more. I know that’s weird coming from me! When looking at women on the red carpet, I love the collarbone. I love just a hint of cleavage, I love when the skin itself is so beautiful and rich. It’s so lovely-looking. That’s way more sexy than a curve-hugging boobs-out-over-the-top-of-the-dress dress.

With this Access Hollywood gig, you’re encroaching on territory long held by Joan Rivers. Anything you want to say to her?

JW: Joan Rivers is a goddess and I love her. I’m not a comedian, so I won’t have that take on the red carpet. I think mine is more to appreciate the amazing artists that are going to be standing there in front of us. If I see Meryl Streep in my close proximity, I will die. I will faint. I will just die. I won’t make fun of anyone, because it’s not my place to, not yet anyway. And I’m just so excited to see what everyone wears. I’ve done some Oscars events before, with the Elton John party and the Vanity Fair party, but to actually be on the red carpet is going to be such a fun occasion.

So...any new updates on the alleged incident?

From former child stars to young musicians, the 18th season of Dancing with the Stars is filled with an eclectic mix of competitors. But the most interesting may be the casting of Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

Davis, 27, and White, 26, ruled the rink at last month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, winning the gold medal in ice dancing. Now they'll battle in the ballroom – but against each other for the mirror ball trophy. White will dance with Sharna Burgess, while Davis will shimmy with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Valentin's brother, who is back after taking last season off.

The 12 new contestants on ABC's hit show were announced Tuesday morning on Good Morning America.

• Amy Purdy, 34, is a former Amazing Race contestant and U.S. Paralympic snowboarder who, at 19, contracted Neisseria meningitis and had both legs amputated below the knee. She will dance with last season's pro champ, Derek Hough.

• Billy Dee Williams, 76, is the singer and actor who played Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars films. He will dance with Emma Slater.

• Candace Cameron Bure, 37, a mom to three, is best known for her role as D.J. Tanner on '90s sitcom Full House. The sister of fellow former child star Kirk Cameron, she will dance with Mark Ballas.

• Danica McKellar, 39, is another former child star who will slip on her dancing shoes this season. Now an author of math books, McKellar played adorable brainiac Winnie Cooper in another '90s hit, The Wonder Years.

• Cody Simpson, 17, is an Australian pop singer signed to Justin Bieber manager Scooter Braun's label. He will dance with newcomer Witney Carson.

• Diana Nyad, 64, is a long-distance swimmer who made Barbara Walters's list of the most fascinating people of 2013 after remarkably swimming from Cuba to Florida. She will dance with newbie Henry Byalikov.

• Drew Carey, 55, comedian and current host of The Price Is Right, will pair off with Cheryl Burke.

• James Maslow, 23, is the former star of Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush and a member of the boy band of the same name. He will dance with Peta Murgatroyd.

• NeNe Leakes, 46, a former actress on The New Normal, has also lent her famous face to reality TV on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Celebrity Apprentice and I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding. She will partner with Tony Dovolani.

• Sean Avery, 33, is a former NHL player who has also worked in fashion and as a model and restaurateur. He's currently employed at creative advertising agency Lipman in New York City. He will dance with Karina Smirnoff.

The new season kicks off March 17 with Erin Andrews Evan's favorite faghagas the new co-host with Tom Bergeron.

Screws Removed From Plushenko's Back in Major Operation
MOSCOW, March 05, 2014 (AFP) -

Israeli doctors have removed four screws from the back of Russian figure skating star Yevgeny Plushenko in a mammoth operation and expect him to make a full recovery, Russian state television said Wednesday.

Plushenko pulled out of the individual competition at the Sochi Olympics after injuring his fragile back in practice. He had already won gold in the team competition and many questioned why he was skating in the individual.

After a controversy that overshadowed the men's skating finals at the Games, Plushenko, 31, went to an Israeli clinic in Tel Aviv for a new operation on his back.

Never shy of publicity, Plushenko allowed Russia's Channel One television to film the operation, which took place this week, and his first nervous steps around the hospital ward.

The television said the doctors had intended to replace a broken screw in his back that supports an artificial disc in his vertebrae.

But seeing that the bone was now supporting the disc well, they decided to remove all four screws from his back.

Plushenko, who announced his retirement in Sochi, said he did not rule out now returning to skating.

"I am going to stop worrying that something will break," he said dressed in a hospital smock. "Maybe I will continue sport. I'm joking, for the moment."

With the characteristic bravado that makes him a love/hate figure, he added: "You need to sacrifice something for a medal. And I sacrificed my health. Someone will say I am a fool, someone else a hero.

"But I am as I am, I love sport and I love risk."

The television, in somewhat macabre footage, showed the removed screws including the broken one that was supposed to have been indestructible.

"It is supposed to be strong enough to go to space. But a triple and a half axel broke it in two," the television said.

The Russian-speaking Israeli doctors treating him said that the operation had gone so well he could be back to full form within months.

"If you look half a year ahead then I would not prescribe any restrictions. I think he will be able to skate," said doctor Ilya Pekarsky.

Johnny Weir makes court appearance for biting lawyer husband during fight: report

Weir and his husband, Victor Voronov, reportedly appeared in New Jersey court Tuesday to ask a judge to dismiss charges related to a pre-Olympics domestic dust-up.

Olympic commentator Johnny Weir was facing charges for biting his lawyer husband during domestic dispute, but a lenient judge let him skate after the couple appeared in court together, according to a report.

Radar Online reported the former figure skater and his husband, Victor Voronov, made a quiet appearance in a Lyndhurst, N.J., court Tuesday to ask a judge to toss out the case, which stemmed from a spat they had about a month before the Sochi Olympics.

Voronov allegedly told police the champion skater bit him during the fight, the site reported.

In court, though, the icy feud appeared to have thawed as Voronov touched Weir's knee and whispered sweetly in his ear.

Radar Online reported Weir bit Voronov during a fight about a month before the Sochi Olympics. A judge granted Voronov's request to throw out the case.

Radar reported the judge complimented Weir's look — "Nice hairdo," she said— before granting Voronov's request to have the charges dismissed.

Approached after the hearing, the NBC commentator said, "It is a private matter I do not wish to discuss," before hustling into a car.

Weir, 29, and Voronov, a Georgetown law grad, tied the knot on New Year's Eve in 2011.

Weir and Tara Lipinski as NBC figure skating commentators during the Sochi Olympics last month.

Last month, the three-time national champion admitted things occasionally got stormy between the two.

"We're both constantly trying to fight to wear the pants in the relationship," he told Access Hollywood. "It's constant fireworks. It's very boom, boom, boom." (cringe...don't need the sound effects johnny)

But Weir deserved high scores for keeping the biting drama quiet during the Olympics in Sochi, where all the chatter focused on his wild wardrobe and on-air chemistry with booth partner Tara Lipinski. (lol ofc he kept it quiet during the OLYMPICS, nbc doesn't want an alleged husband beater commentating)

On Tuesday, Voronov tweeted a cute selfie showing the pair grocery shopping together.

"Life back to normal pace at least for today," he wrote.

SMH....do you think this is really the end or do you think Victor was beat into submission???  Unless Victor is a drama queen, I don't think ppl regularly file restraining orders for "little dust-ups"...

[Exclusive] "Gold. Love. All Yuna's"…Kim Yuna Falls in Love

Kim Yuna has fallen in love. The lucky guy is ice hockey player Kim Won-jung. He is the national team’s undisputed best player, a graduate of Korea University who played for Anyang Halla. For now he plays in the ice hockey team of the Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps (Daemyung Sangmu).

[DispatchㅣArticle by 임근호·송은주·서보현] Taereung National Training Center does not have a separate ice rink for figure skating. The figure skaters share the space with short track speed skaters, hockey players and others by splitting the time. Figure skaters get the rink from 10 to 1, short track skaters from 1 to 3, and the hockey team from 3 to 6.

Although Korea is the country of figure skating’s current golden girl, the training environment leaves much to be desired. If there is a silver lining, it’s in often getting to see the person one cares about. That is the case for Kim Yuna and Kim Won-jung, who were each other’s strength as they rooted for each other.

He was the strongest contributor in getting his team into the Asia League Ice Hockey PO in 2013 and 2014, and was the star of the 2013 Ice Hockey championship win.

The ice wasn’t such a cold place when it came to love.

In July of 2012, Kim Yuna announced that she would return for one more Olympics game. She stepped up her game since her last great victory in Vancouver. It was an important decision for Korea’s figure skating future, a resolve made for the younger figure skaters who were heading for Sochi. And so Kim Yuna returned to Taereung Training Center in two years.

She was called the “Queen,” was seen as a “conqueror” on ice. But going back to the start to take on that challenge again was painful. Even in constant burning movement, she kept her head cool.

Her oasis was sunbae Kim Won-jung.

Dispatch covered Kim Yuna’s last moments to the Olympics, with a record of six months’ training starting in August of last year. It also captured Kim Yuna’s dates with Kim Won-jung on September 5, her birthday. It was witness to Yuna’s injury and watched her last training session before she left for Sochi.

◆ Kim Yuna Faces Injury

On September 11, Kim Yuna’s face crumpled as she was leaving the rink. Her every step was followed by pain. It was completely different from her usual self. It looked like things were out of her control. Two weeks later, the Korean Skating Union announced the news of her metatarsal injury.

Maybe Yuna guessed this might happen when she decided on her comeback. Injuries would be high on the list of all the things she had to fight. But Kim took it on the chin. She couldn’t use her injury as an excuse to rest. She trained every single day.

Kim Won-jung was there for her. As a hockey player who had to stand body checking at every moment, the pain of injury was familiar to him. A friend of Kim Won-jung said he “was under a lot of physical pain and psychological pressure from his injuries” and that “Kim Won-jung was a strong shoulder to lean on. He would make Kim Yuna smile when she was in pain.”

◆ Kim Yuna and Kim Won-jung- the Connection

Kim Yuna and Kim Won-jung’s history goes back to 2010. When Kim Yuna chose Korea University, the two became colleagues at the ice rink. Both were skaters. Even though they weren’t in the same year, both of them had to face their battles on the ice field.

Taereung was their connection. Yuna came to train in Taereung in July 2012 after announcing her comeback. Four months later, in November, Kim Won-jung joined the national training center. As luck would have it, the Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps had started an ice hockey team, and the national team player was chosen to be part of it.

The Olympics was also a common goal, as Kim Yuna trained for Sochi, while Kim Won-jung aimed for Pyeongchang. The Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps selected national team members preferentially in order to “support the national team in forming the best fighting power, and join in the race toward Pyeongchang.”

◆ Kim Yuna and Kim Won-jung, Sympathy in Suffering

Kim Yuna’s worst enemy was Kim Yuna. In the constant fight against herself, the days were a sequence of lonely difficult hours. To make matters worse, she was injured. She couldn’t even move freely on ice. She would warm up in the rink in the mornings, and do indoors strength training in the afternoons.

Things were difficult for Kim Won-jung as well. The military hockey team only had 17 members, about half of a regular hockey team (30 players). In the 2013~2014 season, Daemyung Sangmu had to play in the Asia League Ice Hockey and the national championships at the same time. Kim had to move twice as much to keep up in the game.

Maybe their hardships made their time together seem sweeter. They looked after each other on special days. Kim Won-jung held a birthday party for Kim Yuna last September 5, while Kim Yuna celebrated Kim Won-jung’s birthday on December 19. And they didn’t miss out on Christmas Eve, Korea’s day for sweethearts.

◆ Kim Yuna and Kim Won-jung’s Stolen Hours

In fact, the two didn’t have much time to meet. Yuna, for one, had to focus on the Sochi games. Her training went on from 9 to 6. Kim Won-jung is serving his compulsory military service, which means he has to live in the squadroom even in the training center, and has restrictions on leaving it.

Although the two practiced in the same rink, their paths only crossed in a flash. Kim Yuna would finish her training just as Kim Won-jung was starting his… it was the only hour they could see the other’s face.

But they did have one rule- to meet outside the center twice a month. Usually they had to adjust the hours to Kim Won-jung’s days or nights off. Since the army team swept through the championships last season, they were rewarded with days/nights off and stand-downs on the days after important matches. Those were the hours that the two would meet.

◆ Yuna and Won-jung on Samgyeopsal Dates

Not that the dating hours were long. At most they had about two hours for meals. Usually they went to Korean barbecue places near Taereung. The menu was almost always samgyeopsal, an extension of their training.

Not surprising, as Kim Yuna was obliged to eat samgyeopsal to keep up her strength. She once said in an Olympics press conference that she “had to build muscles fast. Because I use up so much energy I consciously eat meat.”

The two blocked out attention to themselves with the help of friends and acquaintances. They went on double dates like they were meeting friends. Kim Yuna’s manager was also present for most of the dinners. People around them recognized Yuna, but couldn’t suspect the relationship.

◆ Gold. Love. All Yuna's.

7 minutes. For a 7-minute performance Kim Yuna toiled 600 days. It amounts to a total of 104,592 hours. In all, she trained for 8,705,520 hours. And on February 21, she gave her all in Sochi. All of Korea cried. But Kim Yuna smiled. It was a smile that said, it’s all over now, I’m free.

She battled herself for an Olympics that was shared by everyone. It must have been a lonely and difficult time. Kim Won-jung was a shoulder she could lean on, an umbrella that protected her, a shade where she could rest.

Gold. Love. All Yuna’s. Now she puts down the heavy crown to plan a new life. Let’s hope it starts with her sweet newfound love. Not as the queen on ice, but for 24-year-old Yuna.
