Evan Lysacek, the 2010 Olympic champion, has withdrawn from 2012 Skate America due to a groin injury, U.S. Figure Skating announced today. He will be replaced by Armin Mahbanoozadeh.
Lysacek was scheduled to take part in this year's Skate America, Oct. 19-21 in Kent, Wash., as part of his return to competitive figure skating. He has not competed since winning his Olympic title in February 2010. Lysacek expects to take the ice at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Jan. 20-27 in Omaha, Neb.
This is second time in as many seasons Lysacek has withdrawn from the event. He appeared on the entry list for 2011 Skate America, as well as 2011 Trophée Eric Bompard, but did not compete at either because of a disagreement with his athlete contract.
Lysacek announced his intentions to resume his competitive career Aug. 10 of this year on NBC's TODAY in London.
"I am returning to competitive skating with the ultimate goal of representing the U.S. at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and successfully defending my Olympic title," Lysacek said at the time.
Mahbanoozadeh will make his third consecutive Skate America appearance. He won bronze at 2010 Skate America in Portland, Ore. The 2012 U.S. pewter medalist, Mahbanoozadeh began his season with a silver-medal finish last month at the 2012 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic in Salt Lake City.
"I have been training hard," Mahbanoozadeh said. "I'm excited, determined and ready to go. I am looking forward to competing next week."
